WINDOW PROJECT, TBILISI featuring MARIAM ODISHELIDZE
October 4 - January  30, 2024

Mariam Odishelidze
EXIT TO EAST, 2023

Inspired by her experiences of temporary relocation from Georgia to Düsseldorf, as well as motherhood, Mariam Odishelidze explores the moment of transition from one state of being to another, the transition between cultural contexts, from life to death, from material being to abstraction, from presence to absence, from profanity to sacrality. Motherhood as a significant new experience led Mariam Odishelidze to opt for less toxic materials. She makes use of her grandmother's carefully tended tablecloths, sheets and towels; textiles that were kept as dowries for the girls, and uses them as a source of inspiration and her artistic identity. She uses materials historically associated with grooming and femininity, transforming them into ink-painted tactile pillows with blanket-like textures. Mariam Odishelidze's private experiences as a woman and artist, reminiscent of her birthplace and Georgia's role as a transitional site for cultural, social, and political contexts, inform her artistic language, which emerges from a synthesis of Oriental and Western art.
